How Many Miles Is a Marathon? Steps and Time

How many miles is a marathon? It is 26.2 miles (42.195 km). The official distance is 26 miles 385 yards, which is 26.21875 miles. Almost every entry form, road sign, and training plan rounds that to 26.2.

That is the whole distance answer. The practical questions are how many steps it takes, how long a walk takes, and whether 26.2 is a sensible jump from the walks you already do. A half marathon is 13.1 miles (21.1 km). A 5K is 3.1 miles. Anything longer than 26.2 miles is an ultra.

How Many Miles Is a Marathon, Exactly?

An official marathon is 26 miles 385 yards.

There are 1,760 yards in a mile. 385 divided by 1,760 is 0.21875, so 26 miles plus that fraction is 26.21875 miles. In metric the standard is not a round number either. It is 42.195 km. "26.2 miles" is the label people use, not a second measurement.

A course measured at 42.195 km is a marathon. A 26.0-mile loop is short of the distance. A 30-mile event is an ultra, even if the name on the bib says marathon.

Why a Marathon Is 26.2 Miles

The extra 385 yards comes from the 1908 London Olympics. The course ran from Windsor toward the White City stadium, and the extra 385 yards was added so the finish lined up in the stadium. The distance was standardized at 42.195 km in 1921. That is the marathon still used for official races.

The older origin story is a legend. Pheidippides is told as a messenger running from Marathon to Athens, a route often given as about 25 miles (40 km). Treat that as legend, not verified history and not a measured course. The 26.2-mile race is a 20th-century standard.

How Many Steps in a Marathon

How many steps in a marathon is a stride question. There is no single official step count.

This site's half marathon step count puts walking a half at about 25,000–30,000 steps and running a half at about 16,000–19,000 steps. Double the distance and those bands double. Walking a full marathon is about 50,000–60,000 steps, with a typical moderate pace near 55,000. Running a marathon is about 32,000–38,000 steps. Taller people with longer strides take fewer steps. Hills and a shorter step late in the walk push the count up.

The table uses the same stride lengths as that half-marathon breakdown, applied to 42.195 km, then rounded to the nearest thousand. It is an estimate, not a count from a race.

HeightWalking strideWalking stepsRunning strideRunning steps
5'0" (152 cm)2.1 ft / 64 cm66,0003.0 ft / 91 cm46,000
5'4" (163 cm)2.3 ft / 70 cm60,0003.3 ft / 101 cm42,000
5'7" (170 cm)2.45 ft / 75 cm56,0003.6 ft / 110 cm38,000
5'10" (178 cm)2.6 ft / 79 cm53,0003.9 ft / 119 cm35,000
6'2" (188 cm)2.8 ft / 85 cm50,0004.3 ft / 131 cm32,000

The 5'0" walk is about 66,000, above the usual 50,000–60,000 band, because that stride is shorter.

Your count will not match a row exactly. Stops and fatigue move a pedometer. Check a measured stride with the Steps Per Mile Calculator or the Step Distance Calculator.

How Long Does It Take to Walk a Marathon

How long does it take to walk a marathon is your pace times 26.2. Hold the pace and the clock is just multiplication. Breaks, hills, and a slower last hour sit on top of that.

At 20 minutes per mile you are also walking 3 mph. 20 × 26.2 = 524 minutes, which is 8 hours 44 minutes. An 18-minute mile is about 7 hours 52 minutes. A 15-minute mile is 4 mph, a very fast walk, and that comes to about 6 hours 33 minutes.

PaceWhat it isTime for 26.2 miles
20 min/mile3 mph walk8 hr 44 min
18 min/mileabout 3.3 mph walk7 hr 52 min
15 min/mile4 mph, a very fast walk6 hr 33 min
12 min/mileeasy jog, 5 mph5 hr 14 min
10 min/mile6 mph run4 hr 22 min
8 min/mile7.5 mph run3 hr 30 min

The run rows are the same multiplication, not a race prediction. They hold only if you keep the pace for every mile. Most people slow down. Ten miles at 20 minutes per mile is 3 hours 20 minutes, so a marathon walk is more than two and a half of those efforts. How long it takes to walk 10 miles is a better rehearsal than scaling up a 5K.

Use the Walking Time Calculator if you want the finish clock from a pace you already know. The Marathon Pace Predictor does the same job when the effort is a run.

Calories for Walking 26.2 Miles

These are estimates, not lab measurements. Walking at about 3 mph is roughly 3.5 METs. At that pace, 26.2 miles takes 8.73 hours (the same 8 hours 44 minutes as the 20-minute mile).

A plain formula is MET × body weight in kilograms × hours. It scales in a straight line with weight, and it ignores hills, heat, a pack, and time spent standing at a water stop.

Body weightEstimated burn
125 lb (57 kg)about 1,730 kcal
155 lb (70 kg)about 2,150 kcal
185 lb (84 kg)about 2,560 kcal
215 lb (98 kg)about 2,980 kcal

The 125 lb row uses 56.7 kg: 3.5 × 56.7 × 8.73 is about 1,730 kcal. Kilograms in the table are rounded. A heavier person burns more because weight is in the formula. A watch makes a similar guess. It does not measure oxygen.

This is a gross estimate. It includes energy you would have used at rest over those 8.73 hours, since rest is about 1 MET. The extra cost of the walk is lower, closer to the 2.5 METs above rest. Running uses a higher intensity and less time, so this table is not a run.

How Many Miles Is a Marathon Compared With a 5K and a Half?

A 5K is 3.1 miles. 26.2 divided by 3.1 is a bit more than eight. How many miles is a 5K and how many steps in a 5K cover that short distance. They are not a dress rehearsal for 26.2.

A half marathon is 13.1 miles (21.1 km). Double 13.1 and you land on 26.2. Steps scale the same way if your stride holds: walking about 25,000–30,000 for the half and about 50,000–60,000 for the full, running about 16,000–19,000 and about 32,000–38,000. A tired stride usually shortens, so a full is often a little more than double a fresh half.

Anything longer than 26.2 miles is an ultra. There is no single ultra distance.

Who Should Not Try 26.2 Yet

Most people should not jump from a 5K to walking 26.2 miles. A 5K is 3.1 miles. A marathon walk at 3 mph is 8 hours 44 minutes and about 55,000 steps. That is a different day.

Build the distance gradually. If 10 miles is still a hard outing, 26.2 is too far for one session. Walking 10 miles a day tells you more about your feet and your time than one long attempt. Be able to repeat 10 miles before you add large chunks toward 26.2.

About 55,000 steps is roughly four and a half times a 12,000-step day. Is 12,000 steps a day good is a question about an ordinary day, and that total is still a slice of a marathon walk.

Get advice before a long attempt if you have a current injury, chest pain, fainting, or breathlessness that does not match the effort. This page is distance math, not a training plan or medical clearance.

Common Questions

Is a marathon always 26.2 miles?

An official marathon is. The distance is 26 miles 385 yards, written as 26.2 miles, and fixed at 42.195 km since 1921. A shorter event that borrows the name is not a marathon. Longer than 26.2 miles is an ultra.

How many steps in a marathon if you walk instead of run?

Walking is about 50,000–60,000 steps, often near 55,000 at a moderate pace. Running is about 32,000–38,000 steps for many adults. Taller people with longer strides take fewer. A real walk often lands a bit above the table once fatigue shortens the stride.

How long does it take to walk a marathon?

At 20 minutes per mile (3 mph), 8 hours 44 minutes. At 18 minutes per mile, about 7 hours 52 minutes. At 15 minutes per mile, a very fast walk, about 6 hours 33 minutes. Stops and hills make it longer.

How many kilometers is a marathon?

42.195 km. That equals 26 miles 385 yards, or 26.21875 miles, which people shorten to 26.2.

Is a half marathon exactly half?

Yes, at the official distances. Half of 42.195 km is 21.0975 km, written 21.1 km or 13.1 miles. Half of the rounded 26.2 miles is 13.1. Your step count will not split that cleanly if you shuffle the last miles.

Steps, time, and calories move with your stride, your pace, and your weight. If you are building toward a long walk, the useful record is the distance you can already repeat.
