Naismith's Rule: The Classic Estimate
Naismith's Rule has been used to plan hikes since 1892 and still works as a rough baseline:
Allow 1 hour for every 3 miles of distance, plus 1 hour for every 2,000 feet of ascent.
For a 9-mile hike with 2,000 feet of gain:
- 9 miles ÷ 3 = 3 hours
- 2,000 ft ÷ 2,000 = 1 hour
- Estimated time: 4 hours
The rule assumes a fit hiker on reasonable terrain with a light load. Add 25% to 50% for a heavy pack, difficult footing, a large group, or poor weather. It also does not include breaks, and breaks add up quickly on a full-day route.

Group size Groups move at the pace of their slowest member, and larger groups stop more often. A party of six will almost always be slower than a party of two.
Weather and trail conditions Mud, wet rock, ice, and heat all cut pace. Hot weather in particular forces more frequent water and rest stops.
